This work is the first Diamond Head drawn by Colleen Wilcox in 2011.
This is a natural landmark in Hawaii, famous for its extinct volcanic crater, and is most commonly seen as one of the views from Waikiki Beach.
Creating an accurate representation of the crater was very important to Colleen.
So I studied reference photos and tried to replicate all the shapes, slopes and valleys as they really look.
My representation of Diamond Head was pretty realistic, but I wanted the rest of the painting to have a more"dream"feel.
I experimented with abstract cloud shapes and included flowers and plants in the foreground that aren't actually visible from the real world beyond Diamond Head.
I was learning and experimenting with my style at the moment, but I believe this piece has finally become my classic signature painting.
