This work was originally painted in 2013 as a special order for a gallery art client.
The couple who commissioned this piece live in Lanikai and wanted to paint a sunrise scene featuring the Mokulua Islands with plants in the foreground.
I also drew the Naupaka plant in the foreground, which is common around Hawaii, which was one of my requests.
There is an ancient Hawaiian myth about two lovers, one in the mountains and the other by the sea, to which the Naupaka flower is said to grow in half.
So while mountain flowers usually grow in the upper half, the Naupaka flower in the art only grows in the lower half.
I gave the work a romantic feel, including warm colors and a calm, sparkling sea.
